Friluftsliv: Open-Air Living

5 steps
Friluftsliv: Open-Air Living cover

Friluftsliv means something close to "free-air life", the belief that time outdoors, in any weather, is a basic part of a healthy life rather than a fair-weather bonus. The idea took root in Norway in the 1800s and never really left; you'll still find Norwegian children napping outside in prams in the middle of winter, and offices where "the weather is bad" is met with the reply "there's no such thing, only bad clothing." If bad weather is currently your built-in excuse to stay indoors and skip movement altogether, friluftsliv isn't asking you to love the cold, it's asking you to stop treating the forecast as a decision-maker for whether you go outside at all.

What’s the Catch?

Most of the resistance is mental, not physical. The right mindset about gear and weather matters more than the forecast.
