Sisu: Quiet Resilience

5 steps
Sisu: Quiet Resilience cover

Finland ranks among the world's happiest countries despite winters where the sun can set before 4pm and temperatures regularly drop well below freezing for months at a time. Sisu is the word Finns use to describe how they get through it; not a burst of motivation, but a steady, unglamorous grit that shows up in the ordinary act of continuing anyway. It's the same trait credited, rightly or as legend, with helping a vastly outnumbered Finnish army hold off Soviet forces in the brutal Winter War of 1939. At a personal scale, it's far less dramatic: it's choosing the hard conversation, the workout you don't feel like doing, not because you're motivated, but because showing up is the whole practice.

What’s the Catch?

The practice involves choosing small, safe discomforts on purpose to build resilience. It is not about ignoring physical limits, but rather embracing the 'catch' of intentional discomfort to foster a sense of quiet strength and reliability.

What helped

Tick each step as you go. Progress is kept on this device.

0 of 5 steps explored

  • One deliberately uncomfortable action daily (cold exposure, hard task)

  • No complaining out loud about the chosen discomfort

  • Show up especially on the days you don't want to

  • Reflect briefly afterward on how it actually felt

  • Rest fully once the discomfort is done
